mint dal - moong dal flavored with mint leaves
Ingredients
  • main ingredients:
  • ½ cup mung dal
  • 1.5 cups water
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
  • salt as required
  • tadka or tempering ingredients:
  • 1 tbsp oil or ghee or butter
  • ¼ tsp cumin (jeera)
  • ¼ or ½ tsp red chili powder (lal mirch powder)
  • pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 tbsp chopped mint leaves (pudina patta)
Instructions
  1. clean and wash the moong dal.
  2. pressure cook the moong dal with garlic, turmeric powder in 1.5 cups water.
  3. open the pressure cooker and mash the dal with a wired whisk or wooden spoon.
  4. in a small pan, heat oil or ghee or butter.
  5. first fry the cumin seeds and then add asafoetida.
  6. add mint leaves and fry till for some seconds. lastly add red chili powder.
  7. immediately, pour this tempering/tadka mixture in the dal. stir.
  8. add salt and simmer the dal for 2-3 minutes.
  9. if the dal looks thick, then you can add some water and then simmer the dal.
  10. serve the mint dal with rice, chapatis or parathas.
Notes
the recipe can be doubled.
