Shorba is the Indian name for soup. This recipe for strength is a rather unusual mix of red lentils and spinach.
Ingredients
  • ¾ cup masoor dal (split red lentil)
  • 3 onions, sliced
  • 4 cloves of garlic (lehsun), crushed
  • ½ tsp chilli powder (optional)
  • 3 tsp curry powder
  • 3 tomatoes, cut into big pieces
  • 6 tbsp chopped spinach (palak)
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • salt to taste
Instructions
  1. Heat the oil in a vessel and fry the onions for a few seconds.
  2. Add the crushed garlic, chilli and curry powders. Fry again for a few seconds.
  3. Add 6 teacups of water, the tomatoes and washed masoor dal and cook in a pressure cooker.
  4. When cooked, blend in a blender.
  5. Boil for 15 minutes. Add salt.
  6. Just before serving, add the spinach and boil for a few seconds. Serve hot with a slice of lemon.
